The modern Department of Life Safety was established on July 23, 1964 by order of the head of the Main Department of Civil Aviation of the USSR at the Kiev Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers (KIICA) and was called "Department of Safety and Firefighting".
Lev Andriyovych BURICHENKO , who taught the discipline "Labor Protection", was appointed the head of the department.
The material base of the department was limited to one educational laboratory. Under the leadership of LA Burichenko, educational, scientific and material bases are created at the department. In the future, the laboratory of the department is equipped with unique devices of the company "Bruhl and Kier", for acoustic measurements a noise chamber is built. In the following decades, the department of this profile remained the only one in educational institutions of civil aviation and one of the few in the universities of the USSR.
By 1983, the department increased its capacity. During these years, the department becomes a basic educational and methodological center for training and retraining of civil aviation labor protection workers.
In 1983, the department was renamed the Department of "Occupational Safety and Environment". From 2000 to 2001 the department was headed by Professor, Ph.D. Grigory Mikhailovich Franchuk
Since 2001, the department has been renamed the Department of Life Safety and since April the department has been headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Ivanovych ZAPOROZHETS . Which headed department until 2016.

Development of the department
For almost four decades from 1964 to 2000, the Department of Occupational Safety of the Kyiv Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Professor Lev Andriyovych BURICHENKO, who took a direct part in its creation and formation.
LA Burichenko was born on February 4, 1928 in the village of Khanzhenkovo Makeyevka district of Donetsk region in the family of teachers. From 1948 he connected his life with civil aviation, entering the Kiev Institute of Civil Air Fleet.
LA Burichenko began working at KIICA in 1955. In 1964 he headed the Department of Safety and Firefighting and invariably for 36 years he led its team.
In 1967 he defended his dissertation, in 1968 he was awarded the academic title of associate professor, and in 1981 - professor. In 1983-1986, Professor Burichenko LA holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Airports.
Under the leadership of Burichenko LA in civil aviation the foundations of university science on labor protection problems are laid. He is the head of the team of developers of scientific and methodological bases of the same disciplines for all specialties and specializations in higher educational institutions of civil aviation not only in Ukraine but also in all CIS countries. With his personal participation, fundamental scientific research was conducted in the field of prevention of occupational injuries and diseases of aviation specialists. Since 1971 he has been the editor-in-chief of the scientific collection on occupational safety.
Burichenko LA - author of more than 150 scientific and educational works, including textbooks, manuals and monographs.
For high performance in educational, scientific and educational work LA Burichenko was awarded the Order of "Friendship of Peoples", "Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine", "For outstanding achievements in work", "Excellence of Aeroflot", as well as commemorative medals.
During his work Lev Andriyovych was repeatedly awarded diplomas of the Minister of Central Asia, honorary diplomas of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Civil Aviation and a number of other organizations of Ukraine and the CIS countries.
In 1983, in accordance with the order of the Minister of Central Administration of the USSR № 174 of 07.09. In 1983 the department changed its name to the department of "Labor and Environmental Protection". The change of the name of the department coincided with the beginning of mass introduction of aircraft with turboprop and jet engines into civil aviation.
From 2000 to 2001 the department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Hryhoriy Mykhailovych FRANCHUK. He graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, being a student of this institute and Dresden Technical University, majoring in hygroscopic devices and devices (electrical engineer), 1961

Author of 215 scientific works, including 3 textbooks, 4 monographs, 15 manuals (including 7 stamped by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), 32 inventions. He has participated in 84 international and regional conferences.
From 1995 to 2014 - Director of the Training Center for Occupational Safety.
He was awarded the medal "In memory of the 1500th anniversary of Kiev", the medal "For conscientious work", the Diploma of Solomyansk district state administration of Kyiv.
In 2001, at the request of time, two separate powerful departments were created on the basis of the department - the Department of Ecology and the Department of Life Safety, which included the Department. "Civil Defense".
The Department of Life Safety has been headed since 2001 by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Ivanovych ZAPOROZHETS.

He worked at the National Aviation University in various positions: engineer of the research laboratory of the Department of Aerodynamics and Flight Dynamics, Junior Researcher, Senior Researcher, Leading Researcher, Professor of the Department of Occupational Safety and Environment. Since 2001 he has been the head of the Department of Life Safety, since 2008 he has been the director of the Institute of Municipal Economy (since 2010 the Institute of Ecological Safety).

Head of the Research Center for Environmental Problems of Airports at the National Aviation University. Nominated from Ukraine by a member of the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Expert of the European Aviation Noise Research Network X-NOISE, member of the Eastern European Association of Acoustics, Chairman of the Civil Security Commission of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, member of the Academic Council of the National Aviation University, member editorial board of the scientific journal "Applied Acoustics" and "International Journal of Sustainable Aviation (Inderscience Publishers).
Research is related to the study of environmental safety of air transport. Thus, the results of the study of the impact of operational factors in the field of aircraft engine emissions have improved the models of formation and emission of pollutants, which are reflected in a number of regulations, in particular, in the inventory of greenhouse gas emissions. A large set of studies is devoted to the assessment and development of ways to reduce the impact of aviation noise, the study of the characteristics of noise sources and methods of reducing noise at the source, the creation of methods for calculating and predicting noise from aircraft in the field.
He was awarded the Diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for significant contribution to the development of education. Awarded with Gratitude Prime Minister of Ukraine, Thanks Chairman of the Kyiv MDA, medals of NAU "For Valiant Work" and "To the 75th anniversary of NAU", the badge of NAU "For conscientious work", the National University of Civil Defense of Ukraine "For Valiant Work", the Distinction of educational and methodical institutions of civil defense. silver medal of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR. Author of over 200 scientific papers, including 4 monographs and 6 patents.
